Honoring those who served

As we head into Memorial Day weekend let us all pause to remember and thank those who gave all to preserve the freedoms we so enjoy. We are indebted to you and are humbled by your selfless devotion to your fellow man. Thank you for your service and for paying the ultimate price.

While Memorial Day is a time to remember those who are no longer with us, my husband and I like to show our gratitude to those veterans who are still with us. One small way we do this it to greet arriving and departing Honor Flights as the arrive and depart Washington Dulles Airport. The Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America’s veterans for all their sacrifices. Honor Flights transport our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior veterans – World War II survivors, along with those other veterans who may be terminally ill.

As each flight arrives or departs the airport, volunteer greeters line the way to applaud, shake hands, and thank our veterans for their service. It is a very moving experience and Jim and I are so blessed to be able to recognize these heroes in this small way. If you have never volunteer to be an Honor Flight greeter, I encourage you to do so. You can learn more on their website www.honorflight.org
