Let’s Get Ready for the Holidays
If you’re like me you love to use gift bags as an easy and convenient way to wrap your gifts. But, again if you’re like me you don’t love paying top dollar for them – especially since most will only be used one time before getting thrown away! And why does it always seem like I have gift bags on hand for every occasion EXCEPT the one I need a bag for right now! Who can relate?
That’s why I like to buy plain white shopping bags with handles – they can be used for a variety of occasions like birthdays, graduations, new baby, Christmas and so many others. The only problem is they are BORING – no personality or pizzazz at all. Sure you can use color tissue paper and ribbons to dress it up but let’s be honest here – I hardly ever have plain white tissue paper let alone pretty colored tissue paper. So what to do?
Enter The All Purpose Bag Topper
Yesterday during my Lesson@Lunch video I showed you how to create a pretty little bag topper that is quick and easy to make. You don’t need a lot of supplies and this projects is suitable for all levels of crafters. Here’s a look at the gift bag topper.
This cute little topper serves multiple purposes – it’s a great way to dress up a plain bag, it eliminates the need for tissue paper, and it prevents people from peeking at what’s inside! Now that’s what I call versatile!

Measurements and Supplies
These little toppers are really easy to make. The one I made in the live demonstration used just a quarter sheet of cardstock. The topper for the larger bag used a half sheet of cardstock. Here are the measurements for each size:
Small Gift Bag Topper (fits a 5 1/4″ x 8″ bag)
- Cherry Cobbler cardstock 5 1/2″ x 4 1/4″ scored down the short (4 1/4″) side at 2 1/8″
- Shining Christmas Designer Series Paper 2 pieces at 5 1/4″ x 1 7/8″ (no longer available)
- Basic White cardstock scrap for Modern Oval Punch
- Mossy Meadow cardstock scrap for Modern Oval Punch
Large Gift Bag Topper (fits and 8″ x 10″ bag)
- Cherry Cobbler cardstock 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ scored down the short ( 5 1/2″) side at 2 3/4″ plus scrap for holly berries die cuts
- Shining Christmas Designer Series Paper 2 pieces at 8″ x 2 1/2″ (no longer available)
- Basic White cardstock scrap for Christmas Classics die cut
- Mossy Meadow cardstock 5 1/2″ x 4 1/4″ for Christmas Classics die cut
