Hot Foiling on Regular Cardstock? Beautiful Results and Surprising Discoveries!

Have you ever purchased a new crafting product and wondered if you really needed ALL the coordinating supplies to go with it?

Well, that’s exactly what happened to me!

I recently purchased the Lustrous Leaves hot foiling dies from Stampin’ Up!®, but somehow forgot to order the coordinating masks. Oops!

Rather than wait until I could get the masks, I decided to try something different. What if I created my own watercolor background first and THEN added the hot foiling?

That little experiment turned into a whole lot of creative fun! And while I was at it, I decided to test something else: Do you really need specialty foiling paper, or will regular cardstock work just as well?

The results might surprise you!

Watch the Hot Foiling Tutorial

In this week’s video, I’m combining watercolor backgrounds, hot foiling, die cutting, and even a little distressing to create three beautiful handmade cards.

I’ll also show you the results of my experiments with different papers, so you can decide which supplies are worth adding to your crafting stash.

And don’t worry, we’re going to have some fun along the way!

Card #1: Watercolor Meets Hot Foiling

hot foiling

Let’s start with the card that inspired this whole experiment!

I wanted those beautiful Lustrous Leaves to have some gorgeous fall colors, so I created my own background using three Stampin’ Up!® reinkers:

  • Crushed Curry
  • Pumpkin Pie
  • Cajun Craze

I started with a piece of Basic White cardstock, spritzed it generously with water, and added the colors using a paintbrush. The water allows the colors to spread and blend, creating a beautiful watercolor effect.

Here’s the fun part: There’s no right or wrong way to create this background!

Add more water, add more color, or let the colors blend naturally. Every piece will look a little different, and that’s part of the beauty of this technique.

Once my cardstock was completely dry, I used the Lustrous Leaves hot foiling dies with gold foil to create those gorgeous metallic leaf outlines.

And yes, the foil adhered beautifully to the watercolor background!

After die cutting the leaves, I arranged them on an embossed piece of Cajun Craze two-tone cardstock. A little sanding brought out the white core of the cardstock and added some wonderful texture.

A simple “Give Thanks” sentiment, a linen thread bow, and a few gold embellishments finished the card.

I absolutely love the combination of the colorful leaves, gold foiling, and distressed background.

Do You Really Need Specialty Foiling Paper?

Now, here’s where things got interesting!

Stampin’ Up!® offers Smooth Foiling Specialty Paper designed specifically for hot foiling. Naturally, I wanted to know how much difference that specialty paper actually makes.

So I experimented!

I used the Buffalo Plaid hot foiling die on both Smooth Foiling Specialty Paper and regular Basic White cardstock. I also tried using the leftover foil with a reverse foil plate to create another background.

And guess what?

I honestly couldn’t see much difference between the results!

Both papers produced beautiful foiled images, and the reverse foiling worked exceptionally well with the Buffalo Plaid design.

Does that mean specialty foiling paper isn’t worth purchasing? Not necessarily! You may prefer the results you get with it.

But based on my experiments, I certainly wouldn’t let the lack of specialty paper stop you from trying hot foiling with cardstock you already own.

That’s one of the things I love about experimenting with crafting supplies. Sometimes you discover that you have more options than you originally thought!

Card #2: A Watercolor Christmas Card

Who says watercolor backgrounds are just for fall?

For my second card, I used the same watercolor technique, but changed the colors to Peaceful Pine and Poppy Parade.

This time, instead of Basic White cardstock, I used Fluid 100 Watercolor Paper.

The result was a beautiful red and green background that was perfect for a Christmas card!

I paired the colorful background with a hot foiled Christmas sentiment and layered everything together for a festive holiday design.

One thing I discovered while experimenting is that hot foiling can work on watercolor paper, too!

I also tested hot foiling some butterflies on watercolor paper and was pleased with the results.

Here’s an important tip: Make sure your watercolor background is completely dry before attempting to hot foil it.

I created my backgrounds ahead of time and allowed them to dry thoroughly before adding the foil.

A little patience makes a big difference!

Card #3: Elegant Christmas Foiling

For our third card, I skipped the watercolor technique entirely and let the hot foiling do all the work.

I used Secret Sea cardstock with Silver Opal foil to create an elegant Christmas design featuring beautiful foiled stars and a coordinating focal image.

I love how the metallic foil stands out against the dark cardstock!

This card is a wonderful example of how you can create something special without adding lots of different techniques.

Sometimes a beautiful color combination and a little shine are all you need.

And that’s another reason I enjoy hot foiling. Depending on the colors and designs you choose, you can create cards that are playful, colorful, elegant, or sophisticated.

The possibilities are practically endless!

New to Cardmaking? Let’s Start With the Basics!

A Little Experimenting Goes a Long Way!

If there’s one thing I hope you take away from today’s projects, it’s that you don’t always need to follow the instructions exactly or have every coordinating product to create something beautiful.

Sometimes forgetting to order a product turns into an opportunity to try something new!

And sometimes those little experiments lead to techniques you’ll want to use again and again.

I started with a simple question about coloring my foiled leaves and ended up creating three very different cards, experimenting with several types of paper, and discovering new ways to use my hot foiling supplies.

Not bad for a little crafting adventure!
