Have you ever looked around your craft room and wondered if something other than your stamps could create a beautiful background?
As cardmakers, we sometimes get caught up thinking we need the latest tool or technique to create something unique. The truth is, some of the most interesting backgrounds can be made using everyday items you already have around your home.
In this week’s tutorial, I’m sharing four fun ways to create one-of-a-kind backgrounds using items you probably already own. The best part? Every background turns out differently, which means your projects will be truly unique.

Technique #1: Crumpled Paper Backgrounds

For the first technique, I grabbed a piece of freezer paper, crumbled it up, and used it as a stamping tool. By tapping the paper onto an ink pad and then pressing it onto cardstock, you can create a wonderfully organic background filled with texture and movement.
One thing I love about this technique is that no two backgrounds will ever look exactly alike. The way the paper folds and creases creates a completely unique pattern every time.
You can experiment with copy paper, butcher paper, wax paper, freezer paper, or other clean paper products. Just be sure the paper doesn’t have any printing or images on it that could transfer to your project.
Technique #2: Rubber Bands on a Block

This technique is simple but surprisingly effective.
Wrap a few rubber bands around a clear block, ink them up, and stamp directly onto your cardstock. The rubber bands create interesting lines and patterns that add instant visual interest to your background.
Try varying the number of rubber bands or changing their placement around the block. You can also rotate the block as you stamp to create even more variety.
This is a great technique when you want a modern, graphic look without a lot of effort.
Technique #3: The Potato Masher Surprise

I’ll admit it—I never expected a potato masher to create such a fun background!
The looping metal design creates a bold pattern that works especially well behind focal images and sentiments. Simply ink the potato masher and stamp it onto your cardstock, rotating it as needed to build your design.
This technique proves that inspiration can come from the most unexpected places. Before you toss something aside as “not a craft tool,” try experimenting with it. You may discover your next favorite background technique.
Technique #4: Feather Stamping

This technique creates a much softer and more delicate look.
To use feathers as stamps, ink the feather by pressing it into the ink pad with a clear block and transfer the image to your cardstock by pressing the feather using the clean side of the block. The result is a light, airy background with lots of natural movement and texture.
Because every feather is different, every impression will be different as well. This is one of those techniques that embraces imperfection—and that’s exactly what makes it so beautiful.
If you enjoy backgrounds that look artistic and organic, this technique is definitely worth trying.

Challenge Yourself to Experiment
One of my favorite things about crafting is experimenting.
Sometimes the best ideas come from simply looking around your craft room—or even your kitchen—and asking, “What would happen if I inked this up?”
Whether it’s crumpled paper, rubber bands, feathers, kitchen tools, or something completely unexpected, don’t be afraid to play and see what happens. You might discover a technique that becomes a new favorite.
