One of the most common things I hear from women in my cardmaking classes is this: “Oh, I’m not creative.” And every. single. time. I want to shout, ‘Stop right there, girlfriend. We don’t think like that here.”
Because after years of teaching women how to make handmade cards, here’s what I’ve learned: Most women who think they “aren’t creative” are not lacking creativity at all. They’re lacking confidence.
There’s a big difference.
Somewhere along the way, many women started believing creativity was something you either had naturally… or didn’t. Like artistic ability was handed out at birth and if you missed your turn in line, well, too bad.
But creativity doesn’t actually work that way. In fact, most creative skills are learned. They’re practiced. Developed. Strengthened over time.
Nobody sits down and instantly knows how to coordinate colors, layer designs, stamp images, or create balanced card layouts. Those are things people learn through experience — just like cooking, decorating, gardening, or any other skill.
But women are especially hard on themselves when it comes to creativity. If a project doesn’t turn out exactly the way they pictured it, they immediately decide:
“See? I knew I wasn’t creative.”
Meanwhile, they’d never expect themselves to sit down at a piano for the first time and play a perfect song. Funny how we give ourselves grace in some areas… but not creativity.
I also think comparison has done a lot of damage. Social media is filled with gorgeous projects, beautifully staged craft rooms, and people who make things look effortless.
What most women don’t realize is that experienced crafters use systems too. We use templates, sketches, color palettes, layouts, measurements, and techniques we’ve practiced over time.
Very few people are creating masterpieces out of thin air. And honestly? They don’t need to.
That’s one reason I love teaching cardmaking the way I do. I want women to feel comfortable learning step-by-step without feeling intimidated or judged. I want them to realize they do not have to create “perfect” cards to create meaningful ones.
Because handmade cards are about connection — not perfection. Some of the most treasured cards people receive are the simple ones made with love. The card doesn’t need to be flawless to make someone smile. It just needs heart.
I’ve watched women walk into workshops nervous and hesitant, convinced they wouldn’t be able to “keep up,” only to leave holding cards they were genuinely proud of. And honestly, watching that transformation never gets old.
Not because the card was perfect. But because confidence started replacing self-doubt. That little shift matters.
And crafting is about so much more than paper, stamps, and ink anyway. It’s about slowing down. Creating something with your hands. Taking time for yourself. Connecting with other women. Sharing encouragement. Sending little “paper hugs” out into the world.
Creativity has a way of reminding us we are still capable of learning new things, trying new things, and making beautiful things — even if we’re beginners.
So if you’ve spent years telling yourself: “I’m just not creative…” I want you to reconsider that thought.
Maybe you simply haven’t had the right encouragement yet. Maybe you’ve been expecting perfection instead of progress. Maybe you just needed someone to show you that creativity can be learned one project at a time.
Because the truth is, creativity is not reserved for a special group of talented people. It belongs to ordinary women too. Women who are busy. Women who are tired. Women who are learning.
Women who are starting over. Women who simply want to create something meaningful.
One card at a time. One project at a time. One little creative win at a time.
