Beyond Basic Embossing – 3 Easy Techniques to Try

Bring Your Cards to the Next Level – Going Beyond Basic Embossing

If you’ve been using your embossing folders just to add texture to your cards, you might be leaving a lot of creative potential on the table.

Don’t get me wrong—texture is great. But when you start adding color to those embossed images, that’s when your cards really start to come to life.

Today I’m sharing three simple techniques to take your embossing from basic to beautiful—without adding a ton of extra steps or complicated supplies. These techniques work best with 3D embossing folders because of the deeper impressions, but don’t let that stop you from experimenting with what you already have.

Beyond Basic Embossing

Watch as each technique comes together in real time—you’ll see exactly how to add color, avoid common mistakes, and turn a simple embossed background into a card that really stands out.

Technique #1: Brayer Over the Embossed (Raised) Side

This first technique is a great place to start if you’re newer to adding color to embossed images.

You’ll begin by adding a light layer of ink to your cardstock using a brayer. After embossing, go back over the raised (embossed) side with a darker ink color.

The result? Those raised images instantly pop off the page.

It’s simple, it’s clean, and it gives you a polished look without a lot of effort.

Technique #2: Ink on the Debossed (Recessed) Side

Now we flip things over—literally.

Instead of working on the raised side, this time you’ll use the debossed (recessed) side of your embossed cardstock and swipe ink directly across the surface.

This allows the recessed areas to stay lighter while the background becomes rich and bold.

It’s a little messier (hello, gloves), but the contrast you get is absolutely worth it.

And let’s talk about those gears for a second…

That card isn’t just pretty—it moves. The spinning gears add such a fun interactive element, and honestly, they take the whole design up a notch without a lot of extra work. You can find these simple spinning mechanisms on Amazon, and they’re a great little add-on when you want to surprise someone with something a bit different.

Technique #3: Layered Color with Sponge Daubers

If you want to take things up another notch, this is where the magic happens.

Start the same way as Technique #2 by adding ink to the debossed side—but then go back in with sponge daubers to layer additional colors.

This works especially well with larger or more detailed embossing folder designs (like florals), where you can really play with shading and dimension.

It’s a little more hands-on, but the finished result? Totally worth it.
