1 Cut Makes 2 Cards: The Diagonal Magic Card Duo

Sometimes a card design surprises you halfway through.

That’s exactly what happened here. What started as a single diagonal fun fold quickly turned into two cards once I realized the pieces I was cutting off were too good to throw away.

One cut, two cards, zero wasted paper.
Now THAT is my kind of crafting.

The Idea Behind the Design

This all starts with a simple diagonal cut across a standard card base.

Nothing fancy.

But the second that piece came off, I looked at it and thought… “Well, I’m not throwing that away.”

So don’t toss it—because that’s your second card.

The first card is your main diagonal fun fold with a layered front and insert. The second card uses those leftover triangle pieces to create a pocket-style card with a pull-out insert.

Same cuts. Same supplies. Two completely different cards.

Let’s Talk About the Suite

For this version, I used the Silly Old Bear Suite which includes the Sweet Old Friends and the Sweet Words & Labels bundles – and I’m telling you, this one is just plain fun.

You’ve got Pooh and friends, sweet little sentiments (including Pooh’s classic “oh bother” catchphrase—if you know, you know), and some really beautiful designer series paper.

Right now, this suite is available for demonstrators during the preorder. It will be available to customers beginning May 5.

So if this is one you’ve got your eye on and you don’t want to wait, this is one of those times where joining Stampin’ Up! just makes sense. You get early access to products like this, plus a nice discount on everything you order.

If you’d rather wait, no problem—you’ll be able to shop it through my store once it goes live in May.

How the Diagonal Fun Fold Works

Start with a standard card base in Barely Blush (one of the new in colors). It’s a soft pink and really pretty for cardstock and ribbon.

The ink pad? I’m going to be honest—it’s a little light for sentiments. Great for coloring, not my first choice for words.

Open your card base and line it up diagonally on your paper trimmer:

  • Top left corner at the fold in the cutting track
  • Bottom right corner pointing into the cutting track

Make your cut.

That piece you just cut off? Set it aside—we’re using it for our second card.

Do the same thing with your Designer Series Paper (DSP). And if your paper has a directional design, decide which side you want to keep before you cut. That’ll save you from second-guessing later.

Pro Tip from Tonight

Lose a tiny die on your desk?

Flip your magnetic tray upside down and slowly move it across your workspace. Flip it back over… and there it is.

Saved me a full five minutes of searching and tearing my desk apart!

Building the Card

For the inside layer, I used Crumb Cake and ran it through the 100 Acre Wood embossing folder.

Quick tip—this is a deep embossing folder, so give your cardstock a light spritz of water first. It helps prevent cracking.

I die cut one of the DSP panels with the coordinating dies, and then came in with a little Pecan Pie ink around the edges using a dauber to give it that slightly aged look. I don’t know… something about Pooh just felt like it needed that.

You can skip it… but I liked it. I don’t know, it just felt right for Pooh. Would you add it or leave it as is? Tell me what you’d do.

The Bonus Card (Where the Magic Happens)

Now let’s talk about those leftover pieces.

Those triangles you cut off? They become the front of your second card.

Use a quarter sheet of cardstock for your base and glue those pieces down along the straight edges only. Leave the diagonal edge open—that creates your pocket.

Add a simple insert with a punched hole and a bit of ribbon, and you’ve got a completely different card.

And the best part? You didn’t waste a thing.

It looks way fancier than the effort you actually put in.

Want the Measurements?

I walk you through everything in the video, but if you want all the exact cuts, measurements (in both inches and metric), and layout details, that’s all in the Inspiration Sheet.

Same Cut, Four Totally Different Looks

This is where this layout really shines.

I created four different versions using four different bundles—and I chose these intentionally because they’re the bundles I’ll be featuring in the first round of my Crafty Klock Studio Circle workshops.

These are not the exact cards we’ll be making in the workshops, but they give you a good feel for the style, techniques, and products we’ll be working with.

So if you’re curious what’s coming… here’s a little preview..

  • Gears & Textures (May) – bold, abstract, and a totally different vibe
  • Sweet Old Friends & Sweet Words & Labels (June) – soft, nostalgic, and perfect for that aged look
  • Sunset Coast (July) – that paper is gorgeous in person… pictures don’t do it justice
  • Phrases & Frames (August) – clean, simple, and sentiment-focused

Every single one of these started with the exact same diagonal cut.

That’s the whole point.

Once you understand the layout, you can use it with anything in your stash.

Crafting Together (If You’re Ready for More)

If you’ve been wanting something a little more structured—or just want to craft alongside others—the Crafty Klock Studio Circle is where that happens.

We’ll be working through these four bundles together over four months.

You can:

  • Join me in person
  • Craft along virtually (with kits shipped to you)
  • Or go at your own pace with the tutorial-only option

There’s a seat for you at the table.

Final Thoughts

This design came from a moment I didn’t plan—and honestly, those are usually the best ones.

So the next time you’re crafting, don’t be so quick to toss those scraps. You might already be holding your next project.

If you try this layout, I’d love to see what you make. And if you need the measurements or want more ideas, everything’s waiting for you in the Vault.

If you’re ready to recreate any of these cards, you can find all the supplies I used in my Stampin’ Up! online store. Shop here.
