Playing with Color -a fun and easy way to create

You’re never to old for playing!

I was inspired to experiment with color after a customer told me she struggles with putting colors together. So we engaged in a little back and forth on the issue, with me offering a few suggestions. I hoped this was helpful to her and I thought – I bet there are other creatives out there who also might be, shall we say, color pairing challenged.

Knowing what colors work well together can be a little intimidating at first – especially if you want everything to be “perfect” the first time. Newsflash – it never is! Speaking from lots of personal experience I can tell you with 100% certainty nothing handmade is ever “perfect”. What makes handmade goods so special is the imperfections that give it character – but I digress.

We’re talking about color matching and how it may be difficult to sometimes come up with the perfect pairings. That’s what I love about Stampin’ Up! – the color coordination. From cardstock, to inks, to Designer Series Paper, to ribbon and embellishments, Stampin’ Up! products go together easily!

When I don’t know where to start, I decide on what Designer Series Paper (printed or patterned paper) I want to use. Once I have that selected, look at the colors in the Designer Series Paper and select my cardstock, ink, and embellishments. Then it’s just a matter of putting all the pieces together in a design I like.

But what happens if you don’t have any Designer Series Paper (or at least none that you want to use!)? Hey no worries – we’ve got you covered. Stampin’ Up! has a great tool called the Color Coach. It’s designed to show you what colors work well together. You can get a copy of the Color Coach by clicking on the button below.

While the above suggestions may be helpful my best recommendation is to just start playing with different colors. Grab a few sheets of cardstock and put them next to each other to see how they look together. I’ve found some of my best color combinations just by playing with different colors of cardstock, ink, and embellishments.

Here are the cards I made last week for my Crafty Klock YouTube video:

Playing with Color

For my #simplestamping card on the right, I knew I wanted to use the Pool Party Crinkle Ribbon from Sale-a-bration. So, with that as my base, I pulled the Pool Party ink from the Subtles Collection and paired it with Soft Seafoam, also from the Subtles Collection. That’s another great part of the Stampin’ Up! color coordination – the color collections. You know when you pull colors from the same collections they will work well together.

For my second card – the stepped up card, I knew I wanted a bright pop of color so I pulled Poppy Parade from the Brights Collection but I kept the Soft Seafoam from the Subtles Collection for the leaves. What do you think?
