Have you ever had a bad day – the kind where everything just seems to go wrong? I sure have. And have you also noticed how one small act of kindness can turn your whole day around? Again, I sure have. Some days is just seems like nothing can go right and then BAM – someone smiles at me or says hello, or holds a door open for me and suddenly, my day takes a turn for the better. I love these moments as they remind me that even small acts of kindness can have a profound impact.
In a world that increasingly relies on social media to define self worth, it is easy to forget how important personal interaction can be for our mental well being. A kind smile, a friendly hello, or a “nice to see you” greeting may seem small, but like a pebble thrown into the water creates ever increasing ripples, to too are the rippling effects of that random kindness. Those effects can be far reaching – your smile at a stranger on the train causes them to say good morning to the barista serving coffee, who in turn greets the next customer with a nice to see you, which causes that person to hold open the door for a someone with their hands full and on and on. Small random acts of kindness that connect us all and make the world a friendlier place to live in.
The desire to pass on acts of kindness is one of the reasons I love being a Stampin’ Up demonstrator. Making beautiful cards and 3D items to share with others makes me happy. I keep a stash of blank cards in my purse and randomly pass them out to people I meet. Most are surprised at first but then are excited to receive the card and often exclaim – Oh I know just who I am going to send this too! – Ripple effects – I love it! I am sure the recipient of that care will pay it forward with their own act of kindness.
